Until 1973, Vineyarders figured if they tried hard enough they could prevent erosion. That was when Geologist Clifford A. Kaye pointed out that shoring up one area just moved the problem elsewhere.
Planning for the Future
Scientists and engineers agree that the way to deal with erosion is a planned retreat. Now it's up to local and state policymakers and their constituent homeowners and taxpayers to figure out the what, when and hows.
